The recent deal struck for Frank Lampard and the proposed new contract for Michael Owen is for me the tipping point, I have always been against salary capping but the sums now being offered to little above average or injury prone players is just ridiculous. Alan Sugar once said that, “Money goes through a club like a laxative and straight into the players’ pockets”. it was one of the best ways to sum up the state of football today. If you are Chelsea it does not matter, if you are Man U you keep up the pretence of being able to afford it, and if you are the rest you make do with other top teams cast-offs. Or like Arsenal you “grow your own”. Read more

Final salary pension provision drops to all-time low

August 26th, 2008 by admin
Respond

The number of final salary pension schemes that remain open to new members has dropped to an all-time low.

Of the 100 final salary schemes surveyed for Aon Consulting’s 2008 Employer Survey, just 17% are still open to new members, compared to 28% in 2007 and 50% in 2003. Of those that still offer a final salary scheme to new entrants, 32% said that closing the scheme was “too painful” to contemplate, which is up from the 17% that said the same last year.

Over three-quarters (81%) of employers, however, are continuing to allow further pension accrual for scheme members, mainly to remain competitive when looking to retain employees. Read more

AARP Tool Helps HR Managers Assess Future

August 20th, 2008 by admin
Respond

Most HR managers for the past few years have been reading about the pending talent shortage their companies will face once the baby boomers retire. Yet few of them have the backing of their CEOs to start addressing the issue.

The problem is, HR often doesn’t have the data to back up the belief that their companies will be affected as the baby boomers leave the workforce, experts say.

“Until they feel it, many CEOs tend to not take action,” says Jamie Hale, practice leader of workforce planning at Watson Wyatt Worldwide. Read more
